Perhaps Bart will chime in, but in the meantime I thought I'd follow
up.  Generally grub can point to any partition, whether it's primary or
extended, though I believe it puts the appropriate pointer in the MBR.

When given a choice, if you have a grub that you want to continue to
use, you'd want to choose to have any new install put grub on the same
partition as / (root). And looking in gparted on my pc, it
shows /dev/sda6 has the boot flag and it's (obviously) an extended
partition.

One thing you might want to have handy is a copy of Super Grub Disk
(http://www.supergrubdisk.org/) just in case. It's saved me a couple of
times in the last year or so.
