Wisely used asserts are a good thing (they should indicate that the
program was incorrectly implemented or compiled).  However, there's
been people misusing them to catch run-time errors that should just
make the function return an error code.  I would assume the critics
are really having knee-jerk reactions when faced with an assertion.

That is, unless you have done the kind of misuse I think about :-).
