gcc 2.7.2.3 != gcc egcs-2.91.66...  I am serious, I've once seen an
upgrade of gcc "solve" a problem like this.  I do not remember what
version was giving me a SIGSEGV, though, it was a few years back, and
it's very possible that it was some hardware fault that triggered it
in the older version.  I've no way of going back to check now...

Also, I don't mean to say that the hardware may not be faulty, on the
contrary.  See my post as a complement to anything that has been said
about this, not a way to contradict, please.
