Interesting.  I'd like to view that.

Well, yes and no.  It's not generic as it has special targets for each
platform, but since creating shared libraries is done differently on
almost each platforms, there will be platform-specific data in any
case, no?

There's the portability problem with non-Unix platforms.  I know that
bash and such has been ported to Win32, but there are still other
platforms where it hasn't been done, either for lack of time or
because the Unix paradigms do not work very smoothely (sp?) on them.

libtool has been reported by many to be a major pain on all but a few
well supported platforms.  I doubt it's a good idea...
