It hasn't been solved yet.  My current thinking is that the OpenSSL
variant should be renamed to something like des_encrypt1().

This leads to the question if there's anyone out there using the
OpenSSL variant of des_encrypt() directly.  If so, I'd like to know,
and I'm sure those who do use it directly would like to know about any
changes :-).
