I am completely unfamiliar with this topic. However: OpenSSL
requires the use of perl5 (perl4 is not enough). I didn't manage
to find a release history explaining when this L<...|...> thing
was added. Do you know whether it was part of initial perl5 or
at least at which version it was added?
