Please try to use ssldump (http://www.rtfm.com/ssldump) to help in analyzing your problem. I guess, that the client initiates a renegotiation and does not use the same version (SSLv2/SSLv3/TLSv1) that was chosen in the initial handshake. ssldump should show you, whether really a new handshake takes place.
