The encrypted entity has to include appropriate MIME headers. Several mail
clients wont display the content if it doesn't include MIME headers.

In practice all you should need to concatenate some appropriate headers and
the base64 encoded content (openssl base64 can be used for that) and pipe the
result into 'openssl smime' (don't use the -binary switch).

Try it without enncryption first so you can find a form your mail client will
tolerate.
