The split should ideally reduce the needs to organize separate in-person
mid-cycle events. If some are still needed, the main conference venue and time
could easily be used to provide space for such midcycle events (given that it
would end up happening in the middle of the cycle).

If this "extra midcycle" is sanctioned by the foundation, even if optional, I'm
concerned that it would grow until developer attendance is expected again. That
said, I can appreciate the need to keep the option open for now. Perhaps if the
Conference organizers include a hack-space and allow developers to
self-organize if present, it will avoid the draw that a formal midcycle has?

The cinder mid-cycle is, by far, out most productive part of the cycle, and
this has been true for two cycles now. The midcycle is already much, much
cheaper to attend than the foundation events, and I think the bulk of the
productivity comes from the fact that all of the people are totally focused on
one thing - there's no running out to do something else, little scheduling
around other commitments (except remote attendees) and plenty of opportunity to
circle back around to things. The massive progress we made at the Cinder
midcycle only happened because we came back to it I think four times - the kind
of thinking and communication needed often doesn't fit into slots and sessions,
and really needs the bandwidth of face to face time.
I now think the cinder mid-cycle is more valuable for many devs, and much
cheaper, than the foundation events. I don't see that this proposal will
actually increase that value at all.
