In my experience, when developing software which runs primarily on Linux it's a lot more complicated to attempt to test it on non-Linux systems than it is to learn to use Linux instead (at least in a virtual machine somewhere). Similarly, I would not expect to be able to comfortably develop software under Linux when it's intended to mostly run on Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh. I personally just use Linux as my development platform. I gather some in our community prefer to use Mac or Win systems but I think in most cases they end up augmenting their development workflow with Linux virtual machines (either local or at a remote service provider). -- Jeremy Stanley
