No, the other way round: zmd and rug use libzypp's API.

No, both of these go through libzypp.

No, YaST works if zmd is not even installed.

You can do:

rpm -e libzypp-zmd-backend zmd rug

and YaST will still work. (Except for the so-called registration.)
