The target of this exercise for me was to get the default install small - and have extra packages that many like in extra patterns. I would propose to make a really minimal pattern - and then add all the stuff again in a more optional way that the majority likes. This should be in such a way that the default install will have both patterns but users can disable the extra one if they like to have a really minimal one.
