Very early in install, "Kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill
init!" occurs just after "freeing unused kernel memory" message, which
is followed by "SMP" alone on a line. Hardware isn't SMP...
I don't see the SMP on mine, and the system which I'm trying to install
it upon doesn't support SMP as yet (see below).
We only use SMP kernels now (see my announcement ;-) - and those
should work on single CPUs as well. If not, please file a bug report,
so that we can investigate. Please try the other boot options as
well,

Sorry Andreas, I should have made it clear - I realised (from this list)
that only SMP kernels are now shipped, it seems that's probably the
cause of this problem.
I tried net boot (mini ISO) and CD1, both with all 3 of "default"
install, "safe settings" and [net boot only] NFS server details pre-set
using F4. Same symptoms each time.
I did file a bug report, as did David
