I installed the packege ivman, restarted the system,
Hey, this is Linux, not M$ Windows ;-)
and the problem continues.
Only last night on skype I had to do some convincing of a guy that he
didn't need to reboot Linux to get vmware-server running - it was tough.
This confirms that a reboot is a) superfluous and b) useless when using
Linux ;-) (OK, kernel updates are an exception.)
Reminds me that "kexec" is supposed to allow swapping running kernels, I
haven't played with it since the early releases when I had a problem
with it. I have it turned on in all my kernels since way back then.
There is a saying by aeroplane designers - To fly the plane of the
future, you'll only need a pilot and a dog. The pilot's job will be to
feed the dog and the dog will be there to bite the pilot if he touches
anything.
May be we could come up with something similar to stop pointless reboots.

Did you read http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Automount_CD/DVD_with_ivman ?

I started ivman-launch as user in a terminal and got the following, hdc
is the CD I wanted to automount. Seems I have to do some reading up on
PolicyKit.
