but i will take a closer look at the install and x-server logs
Because of earlier problems, I always ensure I review the boot/grub
information prior to hitting that final "Update it!" button. Twice
now I have been very glad I did, as the hd(X,X) had used the wrong
numbers (off by 1, of course).
I have copies from working menulists in my /homedir, so to find out what
is the problem will not be a big problem, once i can open the files...

P.S. If you have any time, perhaps you can jump into the code and see
what the problem is? Most likely (at least from my earlier
experiences) somebody unthinkingly used /dev/hdX or sdX partition
numbers in the grub hd(X,Y), forgetting the fact that grub starts at
0, not 1.
Sometimes this will not be the only thing, but who knows, maybe this
time, it will be ;-)
