Just to add:
I've also tried to open single tools 'from outside' of the
gnome-control-center window:
I.e searched for 'Display' in the search field (previous this could also
be opened from the commandline with 'gnome-display-properties'), but it
wouldn't open or work properly.
Another tool sarched and found 'Details', opened and showed its content,
but then hang just like the gnome-control-center window itself and had
to Force quit.
