Is 'not possible' is a bit harsh... rather: is not tested/supported
by any of the GNOME Team ;)

gives some guide on how to configure it.
Obviously: any bug you encounter will be asked to be verified using
Mutter as Window Manager.
Hmm the article you are showing is not using GNOME 3 (at least, the
screenshot) but Unity.. I'm not convinced at all you can run GNOME Shell
without mutter.
Let's have Sankar follow the blog post and report back :) then we know.
