Interesting.  As I hadn't tried the force-reinstall from the original 
Virtualization: repo, let's see.

Dropping BACK to qemu from Virtualization: -- i.e., replacing *my* qemu 
packages -- and rebooting ...

... DOES, in fact, now work.
