FYI: I had this problem with Beta 2 and Beta 3. My screen would blank out (go black) and I couldn't get back to my desktop. My workaround was to kill gnome-screensaver, as root, from the console at tty1. With Beta 4, I could just tap a key or move my mouse and return to my desktop . My understanding is that was due to an interim patch. I updated the night before last to RC1 and I'm now prompted for my password before I can get back to my desktop.
