I also have data on seperate places. I have 5 HD's. I am sure here is NO
good solution for this problem as each person is different. Something I
miss (well not personally) is a /data in FAT32 for people who dualboot.

In ~/ there could be a link to /data

My personal first concern would however still go out to a seperate /home
