I have the exact same thing - coincidentally I also use FX5500. Seems to be a problem with the Nvidia-driver - as I believe there's no problem while using the open source nv driver. I believe the problem is there no matter whether you install Nvidia via YOU or using latest official driver from Nvidia.com.
