Greg:  Have you ever USED OpenOffice?
None of this is necessary.

When you install you are given a choice to make OO the default
for certain extentions.  You change these after the fact as well.

As usual its just an RTFM issue.

Open OO writer.   Press F1 for help
Select Find tab.  Key in the word  "Extensions" and click find.

Read the topic called "Changing the Associations of  Microsoft
Office Document Types.
