with kernel 2.6.18 (as long as the kernel source is properly

Please explain "kernel source is properly configured". I have a
problem installing the nvidia driver with kernel-source-2.6.18.1-24.2.
Just for the record, 10.2 beta 2 has the 2.6.18.2-4 kernel and there is
no problem in installing the nVidia driver with it.
