Then your problem is not the initrd file! It can't be, it is not read till
after you choose to boot into linux.
It's got to be a problem with grub own files, those in /boot/grub, or the
copy near the mbr - I don't fully understand that part. Maybe you need to
rerun grub-install or whatever.
