Sorry not to offer a fix...but only a "me,too".  I get same 4% and freeze with 
Epson Stylus Photo RX600, USB, so issue is apparently not with HP alone.
Additionally, printer prints text stuff fine, but graphics, like when printing 
a web page are just a black box, that being the reason I went back to try to 
fix the printer driver in the first place.
