Same here.  That's why I let the screensaver keep the monitor active for me.
I have never used DPMS and know very little about it.  Would it have
basically the same effect (keep my monitor from going to sleep) while
showing just a blank screen?  Is that how it would work.  If so, I guess
that would be acceptable, as far a being able to instantly walk back in the
room sit down at the computer and have immediate access, but I sort of like
having something showing on the screen.  If DPMS causes the screen to be
blank, you couldn't just look at the machine and know "ok, I didn't turn it
off like I thought I had".
