Exactly So.  See my similar post on this very same topic.

Oddly enough, some people fear a 2 year old kernel, but at the
same time run 5 year hardware routers that might NEVER GET
A NEW SOFTWARE UPDATE for their entire lifetime.
Many of these are running old cut down versions of linux with
ipchains.
