I recently tried upgrading from OpenSuse 10.1 to 10.2. I encountered at
least three problems, so instead of upgrading, I did a fresh install.
The problems didn't go away.
1. Everything ran considerably slower, in part because of a lot of
background disk accesses whose cause wasn't clear to me (top didn't
reveal any single hog process).
2. My sound stop working.
3. When I shut down the system from the logout menu, the system stopped
but didn't power down.
Problem 1 occurs whether I'm running as root or as the user.
Problems 2 and 3 occur only when I'm logged in as the user. I tried
deleting the .kde directory, or rather, moving it somewhere, and logging
back in, but this didn't help. I should mention that I preserved my
home directory in the move from 10.1 to 10.2, because the home directory
is on a separate partition mounted as /home. Both the root and /home
partitions are ext3.
I've since returned to 10.1, but would still like to upgrade. I should
mention that my system is a PIII 850 Mhz, with 640 Mg of memory. It runs
Kubuntu 6.10 and DesktopBSD fine, though, booting them from other hard
drives.
Any suggestions?
