Perhaps the term "difference ISO" would be more suggestive? They're a file that tells the program "applydeltaiso" how to modify an existing ISO file to produce a new one. Hence, "delta", a commonly used mathematical term for "change." They're useful when the changes are small by comparison to either version of the ISO file itself.
