I tried with a different IP within the allowed range also with the same 
result as above. /var/log/messages does not show any warning, only the 
waiting message from the dhcp client. I did not run 'dmesg'. I have to 
try it later.

Yes, I did. The NIC was replaced last Friday with 10.1 already 
installed. I deleted in Yast the configuration of the old NIC and 
configured this one the same way as before (plain vanilla DHCP client) 
and it worked fine in the LAN and wide web until I booted first time 
into Windows again on Monday evening. When I came back to Linux it did 
not see the network anymore since. Physical connection is still OK.
