I've just spent three very unproductive hours wrestling with a couple of
printers on my SuSe 10.2 desktop.

(I've had both printers - a Brother HL-5140 and an HP-1220c connected via USB
cables for a without any problem. Both printers print fine to Windows, and
the Brother works fine for Linux. The HP-1220c prints a line or two of
garbage and spits out the page, repeating on subsequent pages).

In 10.1 I did find it easier to configure my printers through CUPS than
through YAST, but in 10.2 I can't get CUPS to enter a password at all.

I did manage to get the following dialog when I tried to enter a password:

BobsDesktop:~ # lppasswd -a rsmits greetings4950
Usage: lppasswd [-g groupname] [username]
       lppasswd [-g groupname] -a [username]
       lppasswd [-g groupname] -x [username]
BobsDesktop:~ # lppasswd -g sys -a rsmits
Enter password:
Enter password again:
BobsDesktop:~ #
BobsDesktop:~ #

As root I can access cupsd.conf and edit it, but don't know what to change and
the password.md5 file is empty.

I've tried everything I can think of to get CUPS to behave with no avail, and
that includes switching from USB to Parallel ports, on both printers (one at
a time) - it just will not let me add a password - even one for root.

YAST isn't any better. I can get the Brother Printer going but it's only mono,
and I need my 1220C for large colour pictures. It worked just fine in 10.1.

In Yast, I've checked and they're both using different USB ports - and right
now I even have the 1220C connected to a parallel port. I haven't got enough
hair left to tear any out, but I feel like it.

As far as I can tell 10.2 just won't let me print to my 1220C.

Suggestions anyone?
