This isn't quite true. 64bit konqueror can use 64bit java. You should be able to select the 32bit version in the (Qt/ncurses, not gtk) yast -> software management, under the versions tab. There is an intermittent bug with selecting the appropriate version though. Which several people have reported with symptoms such as yours of downlodaing the wrong architecture. When you select the version make sure the package is also set to "update" state.
