Thanks. By now I know that on 32 bit system, with default kernel and default 
nvidia driver it locks up too. It is better with xorg.conf from 10.2, so I 
have to see difference in used options, to see what driver module makes 
trouble.

I don't know much about fonts, but if you suspect that fonts are missing 
please compare /usr/share/fonts for 10.2 and 10.3. That is directory that 
contains all installed fonts. 

I compared 2 of them:
/usr/share/fonts/Type1 is the same, 
/usr/share/fonts/truetype there are some differences
for instance  DejaVuSerif-BoldItalic.ttf 
seems to be before DejaVuSerif-BoldOblique.ttf

BTW, from other discussions here you can try to setup above mentioned DejaVu 
fonts.
