Since you let it slip that you were running 64-bit, I'd tend to chalk your multimedia woes up to quirks of the 64-bit install. I've given up on x86_64, for all but the most vanilla generic servers. For any sort of desktop use, or for servers which will need 3rd party apps/drivers support, I've learned the hard way that 32 bit is the only way to go, for now.
