"Boot from the hard disk" is exactly what I did.

I do not remember being asked this question. I am sure I was not. Given that
this was an upgrade (i.e. a situation in which such things as the location of
GRUB pre-exists), it's hard to see why the question would even be appropriate.

So what options are available to me now? To discard what is there and make a
New Install?
