YaST runs "rpm -Uvh <rpm>". What you need is to run "rpm -ivh <rpm>" manually. So, download the new kernel rpms and install them manually with rpm -ivh. Last time I did this, the rpm ran mkinitrd automatically after the install, updated grub.conf and made the new kernel the default for booting.
