None of the automatic installation tools (Yast-zypper-smart) seem to
leave the old kernel & source intact. I have had some success by
manually installing using rpm -i kernel.xxxxx. It would be prudent to
back up source, lib and boot directories just in case. Never let
updater or Yast do the updating for you is a good rule of thumb even if
you normally don't care. If it installs a 'bad' for your system, you
have no recovery. So, always download kernels, sources and patches and
do it manually ensuring it (Yast) won't touch your boot options. I wish
they had never changed that!!! At least it should have left the
previous one until the new one had proven itself before wiping it from
the face of the earth. Rarely is space such an issue that we can't
afford to hang on to an old kernel for a few days or weeks. I get many
megabytes of Yast2 logs documenting each days updates....I'd rather keep
the old kernel instead if space is that much of an issue!
