There's no way to know, yet, Dennis. The first thing to troubleshoot is why "Firefox began acting up and finally refused to appear at all." Solving problems in Linux is like peeling back onion skins in that the way to proceed is tackle and resolve the obvious problems, first, then see where that leads you. Like I wrote previously, my approach now would be to return the system to 'stock' software. Get that working and see if the sound problem clears up. If not, oh well, on to the next step! Carl P.S.
