So, how does a > mere mortal try out kde4? Are you sure you are using gdm as opposed to kdm? If yes, I cannot help you. If no, then switch sessions and choose new seesion. Look in the lower left hand corner where it says Seesion Type. You should be able to choose KDE4 (RC1) from there.
