It's been gdm ever since 9.3 or so, regardless of what I've wanted, even though I always install a kde system - and the list of sessions offered to me includes gnome, kde, icewm, xfce, failsafe, custom. So, you're saying if I can get the system to run kdm instead of gdm, kde4 will show up in the session menu? ISTR that last time I tried to get it to run kdm, it ran gdm regardless, so I put that on my list of annoying things to look into when I get a chance.
