The comments above are all on a 32bit laptop. The 64bit versions of
Audacity have a different collection of problems, which I may get to
later. I tried installing from sources but got the say problems (well
actually I had to disable FLAC before it would compile). This is a
real pain for me as it is messing the flow of my lectures. This
morning I reinstalled Portaudio, but that made no differences either.

My copy of audacity comes from either of these sources (I use smart to
do all my updates):
ftp://packman.unixheads.com/suse/10.2/i586/
or
http://packman.mirrors.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/10.2/i586/
No compilation, or disabling 'anything', was done here - smart just
simply updated everything without a fuss.
