after telling the bios (which says onboard sound enabled)
to use AC97, rather than some HD Sound thing...

aplay at least doesn't hang, and thinks its playing sound (.wav)
files.

However, there is no audible sound, and alsamixer simply dies after saying:

alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument

Google hasn't turned up anything useful for me yet.
