Replying to list in case searching helps someone else: Upgrading to 2.6.24-rc5-git2-10-default did the trick. I made sure to build in all the CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_* code, just in case. I noticed that sound HDA was the default setting (whatever it means) in my bios. Cheers.
