Thats right. I checked out in XP with proprietary software, and it was
redailing fine, there was not  much of a lag. But in Opensuse10.3 the
modem doesn't seems to respond at redial time. I am using KPPP. even
killing smppd and removing module using modprobe -r and then starting
all over again does not help.  I have to restart to get it working
again. Anything to do with CTS/RTR settings?

Try powering off/on the modem, or unplug/replug the usb cable.

You can also try to use wvdial (console program), which gives more control.

Plus you can try minicom to test the modem itself.
