what address does yast report for the modem, and it probably is not a
/dev/sd?? address.

if you cannot find an address via yast (which I am sure is there),
have you tried disconnecting the modem, pause for about 60 seconds,
reconnect the modem and do from the cl "dmesg".  The correct address
will be reported.
