Hello,
My name is Ken Egervari ('speek' as you might know
me in #java). I talked with boxed the other day about helping you
guys out with improving the documentation. After reading the
documentation for the first time, I noticed it could use some
clarifications here and there, more concise and thorough examples as well as
some better introductions to concepts and stuff like that. There are
a grammatical and versioning errors in the documentation as
well. I've downloaded the latest source from the CVS and I'm all set to
go.
In case you'd like to know about my writing
experience, I've co-authored 3 books so far: Professional PHP4 Programming,
Professional PHP4 XML and Professional PHP Web Services. Before you say
anything, I know those are PHP books. The truth is, I don't enjoy
using PHP very much (never have for a long time) but I was asked to write for
Wrox since I did use PHP for some time mainly because I had a lot of PHP
code assets I never wanted to throw away. After reviewing and writing the
first book, I was offered successive runs at doing more authoring, hence why I
kept going with it.
In reality though, I'm more of Java programmer who
has a great appreciation for software architecture and object oriented
principles - something PHP isn't in great supply of. I know what hook
methods are, I understand how to implement an O/R mapper with all the
trimmings if I really wanted to (but why when there is Hibernate :P) and
know what it takes to build maintainable n-tiered systems in general. I
just wanted to get that out of the way because I know many developers have poor
preconceptions about programmers in the PHP community (and I don't blame you for
your skepticism either since its backed up very well by facts).
My prime reason for helping out in the WebWork
project is to contribute back to the open source community since I probably take
more than I give. I've worked on a few open source projects, but none of
them been large like WebWork. The largest was probably www.extremephp.org, which was a set of
frameworks and class libraries for implementing 3-tiered web
applications easily using PHP. I'm going to make a lot of use of
WebWork while my projects are using Java nowadays and I really like what I
see. This will give me the oppurtunity to do something
productive with my free time.
The second reason for contributing is that I
don't know WebWork specifically very well (although my knowledge of model-1 and
model-2 frameworks in general and my software architecture experience
will no doubt make learning fast and will be able to make the
manual comprehensive and insightful). Hence, writing the manual will
be a good way for me to learn this framework inside and
out.
Any how, I'm glad to be working with you guys and
hope to get to know some of you.
Best Regards,
Ken Egervari.
