Hey Mike,
unfortunately it's not possible to update the underlying Ubuntu software
picks by an admin himself. Configs break almost too easily, a "apt-get
update && apt-get dist-upgrade" will not be so easily. It's almost wrong
to describe the "Ubuntu OS" as _underlying_ OS as it comprises a mix of
different sources: not only four different versions of Ubuntu versions,
custom build (upstream) / programmed software fairly dependant on
everything to be "exactly" like it is now.
Have a look at [1] and [2] if you are interested in the details, as we
are developing a new release with Debian 7 as userland base!
