All TomTom's I've seen start in USB-storage mode without help from
ttsystem or any other software on the flash/harddisk.

Not a real serial console, that would be very hard to do in would
involve quite a bit of soldering.
You can however get a console over bluetooth, search for btconsole.

Well, my guess is that that would do an actual reset as opposed to
switching between sleep modes that the power button does.
So this reset button would clear the contents of the ram, while the
powerbutton doesn't.
