I believe the biggest drive to remove mass storage was the MS patent suite see:

It would have been nice to install the ext2fs for DOS/windows/Apple
then?? There are some free browse for linux file systems under windows ...
Not that easy.
We are not talking disk drives but flash ROMs. These can be reprogrammed only a
limited amount of times, as the bits wear off at every write operation.
To distribute this wear the memory cards do not just have the memory but also a
controller with some software in it. It is this software that emulates a FAT
filesystem.
You would have to spread a new generation of memory cards, USB sticks etc.
There is no doubt this will come. On the other hand I think Tomtom will not
take the lead here.
Just my .02 €
As I understand here, Tomtom should not use a FAT file system. That's all.

Of course, I understand the commercail aspects of it. You won't have
access to a tomtom with linux, ... etc.
I will find a apad and use navit/mumpot (or roadmap/marble when available).
I still use older tomtoms for ttmaps (topo maps Belgium/France) (with
32Gb sd card).
