Hello OpenVAS developers,

now that now serious problems occured with the 2.0-beta1 series
and a completed compendium I think it is a good time to launch
a OpenVAS news.

I'd appreciate a quick feedback and dicuss cycle to get the news
out rapidely.

I could image something like this:

OpenVAS 2.0 beta-testing started accompanied with new comprehensive
documentation

In late September, the OpenVAS[1] developer team released the 2.0-beta1 version
of
the OpenVAS server and OpenVAS-Client for network security scanning.
Intended audience are experienced users interested in upcoming features and
developers of vulnerability checks.

The new version introduces first steps of support for OVAL[2] language. OVAL is
an
international, information security, community standard to promote open,
standardaized
and publicly available security content.
OpenVAS server can execute OVAL files just like its own (NASL) checks by using
the OVAL interpreter "ovaldi". While the plain ovaldi tool can only check
systems where
it is installed, in combination with OpenVAS it can test any taget system for
which OpenVAS
collected information. The beta1 release offers sample support for
Redhat Enterprise Linux OVAL tests.

The major internal changes are the cleaned and extended protocol for
client-server
communication (OTP) and the transition to the new OID-based scheme for unique
IDs
of vulnerability tests.

The OpenVAS Network Vulerability Tests (NVTs)
remains compatible with both, the 1.0 and 2.0 series of OpenVAS.
This also means, the OpenVAS NVT feed service (meanwhile extended to
deliver the full range of NVTs, grown to over 5000) is also compatible for
both release series.

Concurrently, the first release candidate of the new OpenVAS Compendium
has been made available in PDF and HTML format for final reviews and as a
base for translation into other languages (german already in progress).

All download links can be found on the OpenVAS homepage[1].
